We can’t deny it – jumping is the part of coasteering that everyone gets most excited about! It might be optional, but it’s EPIC!
Luckily, Pembrokeshire has some of the finest cliff jumping in the UK. In the south of the county, dramatic limestone stacks, sheltered coves, and crystal-clear Atlantic water combine to create spots made for a bit of a leap.
Why South Pembrokeshire is Perfect for Cliff Jumping
The geology. Carboniferous limestone creates clean, undercut ledges and vertical faces — ideal for jumping because the rock doesn’t slope back underneath you.
The visibility. Pembrokeshire’s sea can reach visibility of 10–15 metres in summer. You can see the bottom before you jump.
The variety. Spots range from 1-metre ledges for first-timers to 8–10 metre platforms for experienced jumpers.
The Best Cliff Jumping Spots in South Pembrokeshire
1. Lydstep Headland
Lydders – the land of dreams! Lydstep is arguably the premier coasteering venue in Pembrokeshire. The headland offers multiple jump options stacked at different heights. The most popular jump — a clean 8-meter platform — lands in a deep, sheltered bay surrounded by rocky ledges ideal for spectators.
2. Stackpole Quay and the Stackpole Estate
Stackpole is the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park at its most spectacular. The area includes Barafundle Bay and a stretch of coast with good jumps at a few key points. The jumps at Stackpole tend to be smaller and tide-dependant — best experienced with a guide who knows the tidal windows. Stackpole Quay offers a small-medium jump in perfect shelter, but you need to know the tide is right!
Why You Should Jump with a Guide (Not Independently)
- Our guides are experts. Tenby Adventure guides’ are trained to help you jump safely, they’re experts in judging your skills too (they might encourage you to practise on a small one!).
- Depth varies with tide. A jump that’s safe at high water may land in shallow water at low tide.
- Rock ledges aren’t always obvious. Limestone erodes in unpredictable ways. A clean face from above can have a ledge just below the waterline. Tenby Adventure guides know the coasteering venue like the back of their hands.
- Swell catches you out. A 0.5-metre swell sounds trivial until you’re trying to exit the water onto a rock platform.
- There’s no backup. In a guided session, your guide is watching every jump and carrying rescue equipment.
