Cynefin on the Coast
The Welsh word cynefin — the place where we belong, where the people and landscape around us are familiar, and the sights and sounds are reassuringly recognisable — sits at the heart of the Curriculum for Wales and at the heart of what we do. Our sessions don’t just hand students an activity and leave. We teach them how the limestone they’re jumping off was laid down 340 million years ago. How the tide they’re swimming in connects this coast to every coast. How local fishermen, coastguards and lifeboat crews still live and work here. Cynefin, made tangible.
(Also works for schools outside Wales — the framework translates as “sense of place” and is increasingly embedded in UK outdoor education practice.)
Activities for Schools
Coasteering (recommended Years 5 and up)
Students scramble, swim, and cliff-jump along the coast in wetsuits and helmets, led by guides in small groups. Builds confidence, teamwork, and a real physical-challenge experience. Every jump is optional. 2.5 hours.
Curriculum links: PE, PSHE, physical geography, marine biology
Sea Kayaking (recommended Years 4 and up)
Students paddle double kayaks, make route decisions as a group, and observe marine wildlife with guide commentary. Calmer than coasteering but still a proper challenge — ideal for mixed-confidence groups.
Curriculum links: Geography, environmental science, PSHE
Coastal Walks with Beach Foraging
A slower, curriculum-rich alternative or add-on to the water activities. Led by a guide who can interpret the geology, the ecology of the intertidal zone, and the edible seaweeds, shellfish and plants on the Pembrokeshire foreshore. Perfect for GCSE Geography fieldwork or KS2 environmental science.
Curriculum links: Geography, biology, environmental science, food tech, Welsh baccalaureate
Beach Games and Team Challenges
Structured beach-based group challenges — problem-solving, navigation, relay challenges. Great as a lunch-break energy burner between water activities, or as a rain-day alternative.
Curriculum links: PE, PSHE, teamwork-focused learning outcomes
Combined Day Package
Any combination of the above — coasteering in the morning, kayaking or coastal walk in the afternoon, or split the group across activities simultaneously. Ask us for a tailored day plan.
Rock Climbing (Years 7 and up)
Guided sessions on Pembrokeshire sea cliff crags. Private instructors for small groups — excellent for DofE bronze/silver adventurous journeys or targeted small-group work.
