One of the most common questions we get from first-timers is: “What do I actually wear for coasteering?” It’s a fair question — you’re going to be scrambling over rocks, swimming through channels, and jumping into the sea. Normal beach gear isn’t going to cut it.
The good news: you don’t need to buy any specialist equipment. Here’s exactly what to expect, what to bring yourself, and what Tenby Adventure provides on the day.
The Essentials: What Tenby Adventure Provides
When you book coasteering with us in Pembrokeshire, we kit you out with everything you need for safety and comfort:
Wetsuit
We provide full-length 5mm wetsuits for all participants. The water off the Pembrokeshire coast is brisk even in summer — a proper wetsuit keeps you warm enough to enjoy the session rather than endure it. Our wetsuits are cleaned and inspected after every use.
Buoyancy Aid
All coasteerers wear a buoyancy aid throughout the session. It provides flotation support and adds a layer of protection against the rocks.
Helmet
A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable in coasteering. Ours are adjustable to fit all head sizes, including children.
What to Bring Yourself
A swimsuit or shorts
Wear something snug and comfortable underneath the wetsuit. Board shorts or trunks work fine for men; a swimsuit or bikini for women. Avoid loose cotton.
A towel and dry clothes
A nice big towel and/or changing robe is ideal. You’ll want something warm and dry to change into after the session.
Footwear
This is the important one! You can buy specialist footwear for coasteering but the truth is. nothing beats a pair of old trainers. They need to be secure on your feet (so lace-up is best) and having a bit of decent tread is no bad thing. SOME watershoes/beachshoes are ok – they need to be secure and robust.
Crocs, Sandals (even the fancy hiking ones), wellies, clogs, high-heels, platforms and thigh-length leather boots are all good examples of NON-suitable footwear.
What Not to Wear
- Cotton T-shirts or leggings under the wetsuit — cotton holds cold water against your skin. Stick to a swimsuit or synthetic base layer.
- Jewellery — rings, necklaces, and earrings can catch on rocks and wetsuits. Leave them at home or lock them in your car (we’ll look after your keys.
- Contact lenses — salt water and lenses don’t tend to mix, they can be ok but be prepared to possibly lose one!
